Summary

I have a MSc in Marine Biological Resources and am working in applied shark/conservation research. My study focuses on whale shark ecology and behaviour that leads to applied conservation management strategies through the creation of marine protected areas. I have also varied experience as a university lecturer, experiential educator, tour leader, grant writer, and wildlife photographer. I consider myself a team player and skillful as a group leader.

Research Consultant

Research

  • Conduct spatial data analysis on whale shark telemetry datasets (2011-2020), focusing on regional anthropogenic impacts.
  • Lead development of a manuscript on Whale Shark tracking from the Galapagos and its relation to regional anthropogenic influences (2011-2020).
  • Develop an ArcGIS StoryMap for the "Elasmobranch Nursery Area Identification" citizen science project.
  • Maintain and perform preliminary analysis on a photo identification database for whale sharks in the Galapagos.
  • Provid support to the GCT team across various projects, including map development for the Plastics Project, coordination of Plastic Youth Workshops, and Dive Shop Surveys.

Outreach and Education

  • Design and lead monthly educational activities for "Chicas con Agallas" (Gill's Club), a club for girls aged 8-12 focused on marine science.

Developed and ArGIS StoryMap:

  • Conducted an exhaustive literature review at the regional level for the Eastern Tropical Pacific on early life stage areas for cetaceans, marine turtles, sharks, and seabirds.
  • Created ETP species-specific layers, grouped by taxonomic category, and overlaid with Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
  • Supported the maps with short texts explaining the project what the Eastern Tropical Pacific is, criteria to define early life stage areas for each taxonomic group, the data collection methodology, and MigraMar's goals with the support of the Bezos Earth Fund.
  • Helped develop communications material to socialize the StoryMap and the citizen science project that went with it.

During my spare time I dedicate myself to fostering a deeper connection between humanity and nature through my role as the Galapagos Hub Leader for the Sustainable Ocean Alliance. I lead environmental education initiatives in collaboration with the national 'Mingas por el Mar' project, coordinate and participate in coastal and urban clean-up activities, lead communication campaigns on environmental subjects, and use art to foster a connection with nature by painting ocean-themed murals with community members. 


As an avid adventurer, I also use my spare time for outdoor sports such as rock climbing, white water rafting, freediving, scubadiving activities and combine them with my interests in wildlife identification and photography.
